Today I went to sand my work and picked up a sander that was just disgusting. A brand new sander with its pad covered with at least 1/4 inch of red sawdust. (Yeah, you know who you are) There was no way the person who used it could not have noticed that they didn’t blow […]

Room Air Filters
The room filters are cleaned regularly. It is remarkable how much dust particulate these filters pick up. The air in the shop is cleaner than it has ever been. Of note: I came into the shop one day around 12 noon. While I love the smell of cut pine and other materials, I could not […]
Reminder: Patio Is Not To Be Used For Storage
Members are not permitted to store materials on the patio. If materials are seen stored on the patio, they will be discarded.
New Drum Sander
The sander should be delivered within a week. The old list of authorized users is no more. Members will be invited by maintenance to train on the new drum sander. The list will be tightly controlled and users will be restricted to full time residents and to members who frequent the shop and whom are […]
Dressing Grinder/Sharpening Wheels
This is a practice best left to maintenance. There are some members who may be approached by maintenance and asked to dress wheels when they notice an issue. For the most part, do not try and dress the grinder wheels. Ask maintenance to do so.
Toy Saw Blade Has Brass In It
Pieces of brass were found in the toy saw blade. A reminder that no member should cut any metal (including brass an aluminum). It is possible that the saw was used to cut down a pen blank. Please sand off the excess brass tube in a pen blank or use the pen mill.
Radial Arm Saw Fence
The radial arm saw seems to not be cutting dead square. It was believed to be a fence problem and this was addressed. The blade was also replaced. The radial arm saw should never be used to cut small pieces. It is meant to cut long or wide boards that cannot easily be cut on […]
No. 1 Table Saw (large saw)
The riving knife seems to raise slightly as the work goes past the knife. This was looked at.
Hand Sander Pressure
Some members are using too much pressure when sanding with the DeWalt random orbit sanders. Let the sandpaper do the work and avoid using the edge of the disk as this shortens the life of the disk pad.
Maintenance This And That
• hinge repaired on lost and found cabinet door• broken peg on coat rack near patio exit noted• white grinding wheel was dressed – it was pitted and not sharpening well• 1/2″ bandsaw blade replaced• 12″ chop saw adjusted to cut square – it was at about 89.7 degrees – the tolerance is no more […]
Drill Bits Restocked
Drill bits were restocked in the holders. The previously depleted bit holder for the small drill press (on the side table by the radial arm saw) was replenished.
Lathe Headstocks Repaired
Lathes 1 & 2 had issues with the headstocks. These were fixed.
Maintenance Update
The Maintenance Team had a very busy Monday afternoon. In addition to routine maintenance (checking saws, cleaning vacuums, cleaning room air filters), a number of more significant repairs were done. For more info , read the separate posts that follow this post.
No Parking in Handicap Access Ramp!!!
The access ramp adjacent to the handicap parking spot is for Handicap members ONLY. It is NOT a general purpose loading ramp/zone.
Broken Dust Ports on Patio Vacuum System
The damaged dust ports have been repaired. As they are PVC pipe, they are not overly sturdy. Please be careful when removing the vac hose from the ports. When the flapper is broken on one of the ports (ie. the port is open), the dust collection system is virtually useless as there is not enough […]
